Canada, EU Forge Stronger Trade Ties

(MENAFN) Canada and the European Union formalized an upgrade to their landmark trade agreement on Thursday, as Ottawa moves decisively to diversify its export markets and loosen its heavy dependence on the United States.

European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security Maroš Šefčovič and Canada's International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu signed the enhanced accord in Toronto, reinforcing the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) — a pact originally negotiated between 2009 and 2016 that provisionally entered into force in 2017, excluding investment-related provisions.

Officials indicated the overhaul was necessary to modernize the framework and broaden its economic dividends. Rather than await full ratification across all EU member states, both parties agreed to immediately implement the agreement's core economic benefits — including tariff reductions — media reported.

Separately, Canada and the EU launched parallel negotiations on a standalone digital trade agreement, which will ultimately be folded into the updated CETA framework.

The administration of Prime Minister Mark Carney said the revised deal could open doors for several professions, notably architects, while unlocking greater access to the EU's $1.1 trillion construction market. The two sides also committed to deeper cooperation on pharmaceutical manufacturing, aiming to reduce costs by eliminating redundant cross-border inspections.

Full implementation, however, remains contingent on ratification by all EU member states — a hurdle yet to be cleared by Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Poland, and Slovenia.

The signing forms part of a broader diplomatic push by Prime Minister Carney, who is currently on a multi-country tour to forge new trade partnerships. The urgency is underscored by a striking dependency: approximately 77% of all Canadian exports are currently destined for the United States annually.
