Medvedev says G7 is ‘dead club’
Medvedev praised Trump on social media for criticizing European members over Russia’s exclusion, refusing to discuss further sanctions, and departing the summit ahead of schedule. Trump argued that Russia’s removal from the then G8 was a mistake, suggesting that keeping Russia at the table might have helped prevent the Ukraine conflict.
“You spend so much time talking about Russia, yet [President Vladimir Putin] isn’t even at the table,” Trump remarked, claiming this complicates matters. He cut his trip short to address the rising tensions between Israel and Iran, despite a planned meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Trump also expressed skepticism about calls from the EU and UK for harsher sanctions against Russia, stating sanctions are costly and urging the EU to act first.
Medvedev, who is currently deputy chair of Russia’s Security Council, said it has long been clear the G7 is a “dead club.” Reflecting on his own participation in G8 summits from 2008 to 2012, he described the other members as “zombies” even back then.
Trump has frequently expressed a desire to see Russia reinstated into the group. In February, the Kremlin also dismissed the G7’s relevance, highlighting the G20 as a more accurate representation of the global economy due to its inclusion of fast-growing countries like China, India, and Brazil.
The G7, established in the 1970s, comprises Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the US, and the UK. Russia was part of the group from 1998 until its suspension in 2014. The G20, formed in 1999 and holding annual meetings since 2009, includes 19 major economies plus the EU and African Union.
