Canada’s Manitoba Declares Emergency Due to Rising Wildfires Threats

(MENAFN) Manitoba, one of Canada’s three Prairie Provinces, announced a state of emergency on Wednesday due to escalating wildfire threats and hazardous conditions.

The declaration follows advice from the province’s wildfire and emergency management teams, according to a statement from Premier Wab Kinew.

“With the wildfires in northern Manitoba intensifying, our government has triggered a provincewide state of emergency to help us through this crisis,” Kinew emphasized.

Mandatory evacuation orders have been issued for Flin Flon city and the Pimicikimak and Mathias Colomb First Nations, impacting approximately 17,000 people. All inhabitants and visitors are required to leave these areas before midnight without delay.

Kinew "This is the largest evacuation in many Manitobans' living memory and this will require significant resources and co-operation from all levels of government."

The premier also revealed he had contacted Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, requesting military assistance to help transport evacuees.

At a press briefing, Kinew confirmed that Carney approved the deployment of the Canadian Armed Forces to move residents to safety “in hours.”

Most evacuees are expected to relocate to Winnipeg, the provincial capital, where large venues like soccer fields and arenas have been prepared to accommodate them.

The emergency declaration will remain active for 30 days initially, with the possibility of extension. Kinew noted that this measure enables a coordinated deployment of federal, provincial, and local resources to safeguard Manitobans effectively.
